Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1200 CE. This is an incredible matched pair of high-quality 63.8% to 77.7% silver earspools or ear flares, that are made from large rings with interior decorations of repousse monkeys. The earspools are constructed from thick silver sheets, molded into open ended cylinders with a second layer welded to the interior that is hammered into low relief repousse of a repeating monkey motif, each animal is orientated in opposite directions, with birds set between. Silver was used to attire the nobility, and ear ornaments were often used as offerings or placed in the tombs of the deceased. Monkeys have always fascinated humankind, with their zany antics that seem to mirror and, at times, parody humans. Understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 2" Diameter x 0.1" W (5.1 cm x 0.3 cm); 3.25" H (8.3 cm) on included custom stand; silver quality: 63.8% to 77.7%; total weight: 65.6 grams
