Description:

Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A mold-formed blackware pottery vessel of a rare form depicting a bent left leg with an ample thigh, a protruding shin bone, and a simple sandal with a strap tied around the base of the second toe and behind the heel. Each toe has a delineated nail bed and a narrow groove separating it from its neighboring digit. The round but stable bases of the thigh and foot aid in the upright balancing of the vessel, with a funnel spout projecting atop the knee, and a pair of perforated suspension tabs situated to either side of the spout. Highly burnished surfaces provide ample ground on which the black pigment is presented. Disembodied limbs like this leg were symbolic of sacrificial offerings to the gods that were 'given' by captive prisoners. Size: 6.75" L x 3.2" W x 8" H (17.1 cm x 8.1 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to 1990s
