Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A fine metate or mortar table made from a polished greenstone! The metate sits upon three legs with a rounded top. This piece was likely used like a mortar with an additional pestle or grinder for pulverizing medicinal plants, herbs, or food upon the flat top. The stone has nice signs of use with some minor pitting near the center and a polished mottled green surface across the rest! Size: 9.25" Diameter x 4" H (23.5 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
