Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A large mummy bundle made of coarse, woven textile, painted with black, pink, and white pigment to define the face, and decorated with applied ornamentation across the body. Woven textile arms are conjoined across the chest with a diagonal strap, and the verso of the bundle is wrapped with a gauze-like fabric with a sage-green coloration. Several thin copper panels are sewn in two rows above and below a larger slanted panel, and beneath are a pair of feather-adorned strands. Long, wispy locks of hair are sewn to the top of the head and create a haunting effigy of the deceased. Size: 11.75" W x 15.75" H (29.8 cm x 40 cm).
