Description:

Pre-Columbian, modern day Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A hammered thin silver sheet cut into the shape of a fish, made as an applique to be sewn onto woven textiles. The fish appears to be a tuna, with its two closely-spaced dorsal fins on its back and a lunate tail. These large fish were probably an important food item for the Chancay, who liked to display their wealth with flashy metal sewn onto their clothing. Comes displayed on a custom stand. Size of applique: 2" L x 0.75" W (5.1 cm x 1.9 cm)
