Description:

Central Europe, Celtic culture, possibly La Tiene, ca. 300 BCE. To find ancient iron from this period is rare, but to find such an object intact is even more remarkable. Iron short sword with long tang designed to hold a wooden or horn grip, arched pommels with two original iron rivets which also held a wooden guard in place. A wonderful example that could be attached invisibly to a wall using magnets (ask us how) - making it appear to be floating. A truly striking example! Size: 16.25" L (41.3 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000

#160077

  • Condition: Exhibiting deeply oxidized surface throughout - expected of iron objects of such antiquity - but remarkably stable and intact. Very tip slightly bent upward, which is probably a result of battle usage. Not ceremonially killed as one usually sees in tombs, so probably a battlefield find.
