Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built and rare pottery olla in the form of a fish. Oblong jar with four extended fins and fanned tail with amusing face with raised eyes and circular mouth. Vessel liberally painted in red and black on light orange pottery. Four suspension holes located front and rear so vessel could be hung out of the reach of children, dogs, raccoons or other pests. A very lovely example! Size: 11.4" L x 6.75" W x 5.9" H (29 cm x 17.1 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: Private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000.

  • Condition: Restoration to rim and tail, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to pigment, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to black and red motifs.
