Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico and Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A rare type of hand-built Ramos style gourd shaped pottery vessel featuring a janiform figural head atop the oblong body. The rounded base suggests use as a flask suspended from a cord around the neck, or positioned upright in a sandy surface, the body then tapers inward at the neck, surmounted by the figural head, with a circular opening in the top. One face smiles and the other glowers with downturned lips, the rest of the buff surface is painted with red and black motifs; spiraling, linear, and geometric patterns. Size: 3" Diameter x 6.5" H (7.6 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired prior to 2002
