Description:

Ancient Near East, Byzantine period, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A beautiful depiction of the crucified Christ, hand-carved from a single piece of either cow or pig bone. His head leans slightly to one side upon a raised shoulder, and drilled holes are visible where his now-missing arms should have gone. His gaunt appearance is accentuated by a slender waist and aged, deep brown appearance, with a loosely-hanging waist cloth and bony knees. A small perforation rests in the middle of both feet, indicative of the nail driven through during the crucifixion. Size: 3.75" H (9.5 cm).
