Description:

North America, Lance Formation, Niobrary County, Wyoming, private land, late Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous period, ca. 68 to 66 million years ago. What an amazing find! Lower jaw bone of juvenile Triceratops horridus (Horrible Three-Horned Face) - one of the three or four dinosaurs that makes up the pantheon of all dinos! As a child if we played with plastic dinosaurs - and who didn't - a Triceratops was always among our collections with its three huge horns and wide bony plate above its shoulders. This example of the lower, right mandible is from a small juvenile - probably less than a year old - and while having no teeth present it shows one socket where a tiny tooth once sat. Was it an easy target of a T-Rex that happened upon it, a natural disaster like a flood or mudslide, or some other catastrophe? We will never know. Found on private land. Size: 6.5" L x 5.75" W (16.5 cm x 14.6 cm).
