Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico City region, Aztec Empire, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A rare and beautiful musical instrument. With four finger holes, a narrow blowing hole, and a flared, conical opening end, this instrument can still produce beautiful music. Near the mouthpiece is a cute coyote figure. It stands with its head rising above the side with the finger holes; its feet are on the underside and the mouthpiece is almost a tail. Bright red pigment marks out a band around the finger holes. Size: 12.3" L x 2.5" W (31.2 cm x 6.4 cm)

It is completely fitting that this flute has a coyote incorporated into its design. Huehuecoyotl ("Very Old Coyote" in Nahuatl) was the Aztec god of music, dance, and, of course, mischief. He was known for his great parties and for causing benign mischief amongst humans and other gods in order to amuse himself.
