Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Aztec culture, ca. 1350 to 1530 CE. Very rare and somewhat macabre example of Aztec workmanship. Carved from the interior of the Pacific giant clam, most certainly brought to the interior of the country through the vast Aztec trade network. Skull shaped pendant with drilled eyes, slightly raised nose area and set of 4 upper and lower teeth - drilled on the sides for suspension. Skull mounted to modern 14kt gold ring and can safely be worn if desired. US size 11, perfect for the man in your life, even if that is you! Size: .875" W x 1" H (2.2 cm x 2.5 cm).

The Aztec in particular seemed to have a fascination with the human skull. A number of examples from central Mexico have survived and adorn museums around the world with perhaps the most famous being the turquoise mosaic mask in the British Museum.
