Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A magnificent seated couple created by the Jalisco culture of western Mexico, both the male and female with characteristically elongated heads and large angular coiffures/headdresses, substantive ear ornaments, and finely detailed visages with coffee bean eyes, fleshy cheeks, long, straight noses and parted lips perhaps indicating that they engaged in prayer or chanting. The female has pronounced breasts projecting from under her arms, a protruding belly with a large navel, perhaps indicative of her pregnant or at least fertile state, and she wears a long skirt and double armlets. The male figure is nude, sits with upraised knees, legs spread apart so as to display his penis, as he holds a large club or sceptor. Both in nice condition, a wonderful pair, and rare to find as a pair! Size: male measures 11-1/2"H; female measures 9-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex-private Walter Young collection, Colorado Springs, CO; ex-Minerva Gallery All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110026

  • Condition: Intact and near choice! Expected surface wear. Nice manganese blooms.
