Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin to Moche culture, ca. 1200 BCE to 800 CE. A high-quality silver ingot, likely a by-product of the casting process, made by pouring molten metal - in this case comprised of 87.45% silver and 10% copper - onto a sandy or uneven surface, resulting in a rough, bumpy, but flattened shape. The earliest known silver casting in Peru dates back to the Early Horizon period (ca. 1200 to 500 BCE) and is primarily associated with the Chavin culture. While evidence of silver working can be traced to the Chavin, it was during the subsequent Early Intermediate Period (ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE), under cultures like the Moche, that silver casting techniques became more refined. The Moche (ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE) were highly skilled metalworkers and are known for producing intricate silver and gold objects, often using lost-wax casting. This period saw the height of casting techniques in Peru, particularly in northern coastal cultures. Size: 4" L x 4" W (10.2 cm x 10.2 cm); silver quality: 87.45%; weight: 212.1 grams
