Description:

Oceania / Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 1400 CE. A relatively light, grey basalt adz (adze), hand-knapped and made to be used for cutting, smoothing, and carving wood. Adzes are called "ko'i" in Polynesia, and they seem to have been traded widely - indeed, adzes from Hawaii have been found thousands of miles away in what is now French Polynesia, demonstrating the incredible skill of Polynesian navigators. Size: 5.55" W x 1.7" H (14.1 cm x 4.3 cm)

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection; ex-Leo Fortress collection, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
