Description:

Native American, southwestern United States, Arizona to New Mexico, Rio Grande Watershed, Anasazi culture, ca. 1300 to 1600 CE. A fabulous and large hand-built pottery canteen with a slightly concave base leading to a spherical body, a rounded shoulder encircling a pair of arching suspension loops, and a squat neck with a wide mouth. A thick swath of white pigment courses around the upper body and displays two pairs of abstract geometric motifs, one with a pair of triangles inside a hook-billed diamond, and the other with a lattice-pattern panel within a stepped-lined diamond. The loop handles each boast a ladder-form motif in black pigment. Cups and bowls are common utilitarian finds among Anasazi dwellings, though brightly-colored canteens like this example are quite rare. Size: 7.875" W x 6.1" H (20 cm x 15.5 cm).
