Description:

Native American, southwestern United States, Four Corners region, Southern Colorado Plateau, Pueblo I/Pueblo II (Anasazi) period, ca. 875 to 1050 CE. A fine ceramic mug, painted in the style most commonly excavated at the great Anasazi city of Chaco Canyon known as "Red Mesa Black-on-White." The exterior is painted fully white, and an intricate geometric register of applied black mineral pigment encircles the walls. A highly-stylized anthropomorphic figure is illustrated on the handle with three-fingered arms flanking the bar-shaped head and hanging from a stocky body with fused legs. Even the most elementary human depiction is scarcely found on Anasazi artifacts, making this an intriguing and exceedingly rare example. Size: 3.5" W x 3.25" H (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm).
