Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, Yupik, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely smoking pipe, hand-carved from walrus ivory to feature a slender body and a conical bowl, all adorned with scrimshaw decoration of scenes from Yupik life. One side of the sloping pipe shows a fisherman ice-fishing with a harpoon beside igloos, while the other side displays a pair of wigwams next to a hunter with a bow and arrow shooting at elk. The additional sides are embellished with geometric designs. These large and ornate tobacco pipes featured everyday life, hunting, and folklore etched or carved in relief and these elongated shapes were inspired by the opium pipes that they encountered through Asian traders. Tobacco was often acquired from Siberia by way of Russian traders and smoking became an important social part of Inuit life, and by the time that American trade was firmly established in the late 1800s, fine tobacco was worth more than guns or ammunition. Size: 8.6" L x 0.9" W x 2.8" H (21.8 cm x 2.3 cm x 7.1 cm)
