Description:

North America, Southern United States, Central Florida, Withlacoochee River, Oligocene, ca. 38 million years ago. A gorgeous agatized coral that has developed a crystalline structure. This is a fully agatized geode from fossilized coral that has been sliced to see the hollow inner druse encrusted cavity. Over millions of years, silica replaced the coral minerals, creating chalcedony agate, which formed tiny crystal structures. A druzy (also spelled drusy or druse) refers to a coating of fine crystals that forms on a surface, typically the inner cavity of a mineral or a rock. These crystals are usually small, and their collective presence creates a sparkling or glittering effect, often resembling the appearance of sugar or snow. The pure white of this coral is rare and beautiful! Size: 5.5" L x 2.8" W (14 cm x 7.1 cm)

Agatized coral is highly prized not only by fossil collectors but by gem and mineral collectors as well. The majority of agatized coral is either solid inside when sliced or it possesses a relatively unremarkable internal cavity. This druzy is stunning, and shimmers like a million diamonds in the sun! Agatized coral of this quality is so rare that usually it is cut up and used in very expensive custom jewelry pieces. As a complete crystal specimen, it is worth even more in its natural state.
