Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A rare example of a female Mboko bowl bearer, shown nude and seated with legs stretched out in front, who holds an incised bowl between her knees. Bowl bearer figures are known to be used for personal divination purposes by those in positions of power, and were also symbolically potent in illustrating the link between women and kingship. The woman's welcoming countenance is comprised of almond eyes and a wide grin centered by a gap in her 2 front teeth, and her coiffure is drawn back into a tightly braided cone. Size: 13.5" L x 9.5" W x 16.125" H (34.3 cm x 24.1 cm x 41 cm)
