Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Kulango culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare, finely carved wooden heddle pulley in the form of a cow or buffalo with an elongated snout and curved horns. The verso of the head has a loop for suspension, and the tips of the U-shaped body have holes that once held a rod and spool. Heddle pulleys were used on narrow band looms to guide the movement of heddles - a critical part of the loom's mechanism. Despite their practical role, these pulleys were often intricately carved, as they hung at the weaver's eye level, perhaps delighting and inspiring the weaver while symbolizing pride in their tools and weaving skill. The Kulango are relatively small in number and less commonly represented in collections than other West African groups like the Baule or Senufo, making their artifacts, especially finely carved examples, rare. Size: 2.25" L x 1.25" W x 5.5" H (5.7 cm x 3.2 cm x 14 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.
