Description:

Africa, Nigeria/Cameroon, Ekoi/Ejagham (Nigeria) or Widekum (Cameroon), ca. mid 20th century CE. A striking headpiece or dance crest made of animal hide (probably antelope) over a wooden form, with traces of human hair on its head, wooden teeth that project from its open mouth, and cowrie shell eyes. The expressive visage is comprised of those staring eyes, an upturned nose, and three projections on either side of the head. The angular arms and legs - also made of hide over wood - are articulated, present flat paddle-like hands/feet with delineated fingers/toes, and are removable. The flared base is comprised of bent reeds fastened with rattan. A very rare example of visual culture from Africa. Size: 7.5" L x 7.75" W x 11.125" H (19 cm x 19.7 cm x 28.3 cm)
