Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 550 to 330 BCE. A beautiful miniature animal amulet, cast in bronze. The surface has been decorated with lightly incised circles, often believed to have an apopotraic purpose. This one appears to be a horned animal, which is associated in this culture with virility. Miniature animal amulets like this one from the first millennium BCE recall the stone amulets made by earlier Mesopotamian civilizations, notably the Sumerians. Size: 1.2" L x 0.9" H (3 cm x 2.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-California Museum of Ancient Art, Ex-Abu Taam
