Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Viking Rus culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A finely crafted pendant featuring abstract, scrolling interlacing forms characteristic of the Jellinge style. These motifs, somewhat resembling limbs and pairs of hands or paws clasping each other, reflect the complex and symmetrical designs typical of this Viking Age animal art style. The Jellinge style, emerging in the early 10th century, is known for its ribbon-like animals depicted in profile. It is named after the Danish site of Jelling, where significant artifacts showcasing this style were uncovered.
