Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. Late 20th century CE. A stunning and wearable necklace of a lengthy form constructed from hundreds of rare shells known as Pupu O Ni'ihau. The Pupu O Ni'ihau shells are miniscule snail shells that are found on a private beach along the Kaulakahi Channel. Their fragility and petite size means shell hunters must dig and sift through copious amounts of sand to find a sufficient number to make even a single jewelry creation. This necklace features primarily red and white shells arranged in large bands throughout the composition that create an eye-catching presentation. Size (necklace): 60" L (152.4 cm); (largest shell): 0.9" L x 0.625" W (2.3 cm x 1.6 cm)
