Description:

Africa, Nigeria/Cameroon, Ekoi/Ejagham (Nigeria) or Widekum (Cameroon), ca. mid 20th century CE. A striking headpiece or dance crest made of animal hide (probably antelope) over a wooden form. It has an abstract face, with bulging, staring eyes, a huge, frog-like mouth, and three projections on either side of the head. The angular arms and legs - also made of hide over wood - have flat, paddle-like hands/feet and are removable. The alien, disturbing appearance of the figure is heightened by its arms, which are bent the wrong way to be human. The flared base is comprised of bent reeds fastened with rattan. A rare find! Size: 6.3" W x 12.25" H (16 cm x 31.1 cm)
