Southeast Asia, Thailand or Bali, ca. 19th century CE. A rare sutra in wonderful condition, comprised of ten individual leaves on heavy, handmade paper with inked calligraphic script in an Asian language on both sides. One side of each leaf features an image of a deity or warrior finely painted over the text in brilliant reds and earthtones against a rich brown ground. The wood covers are meticulously carved on the outside, one with two dragons, the other with four spirit figures. The underside of the cover featuring dragons is painted with five religious figures, while the underside of the other cover presents three female warriors and one demon warrior advancing on a multi-headed figure embracing a woman.
