Description:

South Asia, Sri Lanka, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning hairpin kondakoora made from 84% (equivalent to 20K+) gold and rubies, traditionally worn by woman in their hair, the tip has a quill shaped profile that helps hold the shaft in place. The 16 rubies are set in prongs, the elegant gold finial shaped into a boteh (buta) shape. This is a spectacular piece that was probably worn by a high-status Sri Lankan lady and probably passed down as dowry through the generations. During the colonial period, gemstone use in Sri Lankan jewelry increased due to European tastes and demand. Size: 3.5" L x 0.8" W (8.9 cm x 2 cm); gold quality: 84% (equivalent to 20K+); weight: 9.1 grams

Provenance: private Boynton Beach, Florida, USA collection; ex-Susan Ollemans collection, London, UK
