Polynesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lengthy wooden spear, carved from lightweight toffee-colored wood, with a long shaft detailed with several sets of faces and arms as well as repeating areas of linear, zigzag, ovoid, and spiralized motifs. The blade has a thick butt end with an eye-shaped design, and a single profiled edge with large and dramatic diagonal serrations terminating in a sharp point. The non-serrated blade side has a dull but acutely-angled edge useful for striking with blunt force. The handle has six parallel sets of twin grooved finger grips that were used to securely grasp the spear. Intact examples of this type are quite rare! Size: 57.5" L (146 cm).
