Description:

North America, New Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted depiction of a member of Los Penitentes (Los Hermanos de la Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno - The Brothers of the Pious Fraternity of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene) a group of Spanish-American Roman Catholic men active in Northern and Central New Mexico as well as southern Colorado. This group has roots in a brotherhood of flagellant orders in Spain and Italy who were inspired by the Flagellation of Christ and practiced mortification of the flesh. This wooden figure depicts a suffering penitente kneeling on one knee, his bloody wounds from lashing evident on his back and chest with red pigment on his yellow polka dotted blue waist wrap perhaps representing additional blood. A rare and dramatic example on an integrated wood base. Size: 6.75" W x 8.75" H (17.1 cm x 22.2 cm).
