Description:

North America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period and later, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous silk embroidered leather saddle mochila, lined in a soft, woven cotton cloth. Decorative stitching and colorful silk embroidery create intricate floral motifs of vines and leaves on the surface; the upper part features red, cream white, and cornflower blue leaves, while cream white and blue piping forms borders and lines. The leather is left undecorated in a strip at the center on either side to allow the legs to rest against it without wearing away the motifs. This would have been used by a Mexican gentleman, whose light saddle would have been fitted with it for feasts, processions, and or other public activities. Size: 29" W x 48" H (73.7 cm x 121.9 cm); 34" H (86.4 cm) on included custom stand.
