Description:

Asian Art. Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A straight-blade Indonesian tombak with a striking iron-nickel blade and a polished wooden handle. The tombak, unlike its more-common wavy-bladed kris counterparts, features a straight-edged blade with a slender profile and a circular base. The hilt is a corseted metal disc with gold embellishments and incised floral designs that separates the blade from the coffee-hued wooden handle. The handle has two primary gripping lobes and a rounded rectangular base; separating the blade from the handle is a circular protrusion with two wings on either side to ensure a snug fit inside the scabbard. The scabbard has a sturdy wooden interior lining surrounded by a form-fitting metal jacket with a teardrop-shaped belt hook. A rare and unusual design! Size: 19.2" L x 1.625" W (48.8 cm x 4.1 cm); size of blade: 11.7" L x 1.375" W (29.7 cm x 3.5 cm).
