Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Kauai, ca. 19th century CE. A hefty and sizeable ring pounder known as a pohaku puka ku'i poi, hand-carved from porous basalt stone. This pounder is meant for grinding taro root into poi. This pounder is shaped with a loop handle, and the word "puka" refers to the open center and distinguishes this type of poi pounder from other pestle shaped types. The bottom is slightly rectangular and flattened as the pounding surface. This ring form of the poi is only found on Kauai, making it a rare tool! Poi pounders, alongside adzes, were the most important stone tools in Polynesia and the Hawaiian Islands. Size: 7" L x 2.5" W x 6.5" H (17.8 cm x 6.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
