Description:

South Pacific, Hawaii, ca. mid 19th century CE. A beautifully preserved kalua pig board reserved for special occasions like the lu'au, made from kou wood. The ovoid-shaped vessel has a highly polished surface with a smooth texture, a flat base, and gently raised sides. Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; ex-Farden and Baldwin families, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, USA, acquired at an estate sale for Emma Sharpe (nee Farden) in the 1980s. The Farden and Baldwin families were prominent in the colonial history of Hawaii, missionaries who went on to own plantations and utility companies.
