Description:

First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast Canada, British Columbia, Haida, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive and rare example of an early halibut hook made from bent wood and twisted cane / bark. This U-hook style was designed to capture certain species of fish such as halibut and black cod. Over time, hooks like these were replaced by non-wood technology but they continue to be carved as pieces of art. This hook is likely utilitarian and not made for sale. Mounted in a modern display case. Size of hook: 6.5" L x 5" W (16.5 cm x 12.7 cm); case: 9" L x 2.4" W x 11" H (22.9 cm x 6.1 cm x 27.9 cm)
