Description:

Oceania/Polynesia, Fiji, ca. late 19th century CE. A rare wooden and textile model sailing ship built by native Polynesians, inspired by European-style whaling ships. Full-size large sailing vessels like this one were used to transport warriors and cannon to invade other islands in the vicinity, in some cases replacing the double-hulled catamarans for which Polynesia is famous. This model has a richly carved, dark tropical hardwood hull, higher at the back end and with a long, pointed prow. Incised geometric motifs that resemble different waveforms, filled with white pigment in their lower profile areas, ring the upper part of the hull. Three wooden masts, complete with woven textile sails and rigging, give the model further realism. Size: 29" W x 30.5" H (73.7 cm x 77.5 cm); 32" H (81.3 cm) on included custom stand.
