Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A matching pair of roof tiles, carved from wood into the form of seated elephants. Each is painted grey, with dark ears, green wing-like flourishes on the sides of the body, and short white tusks. Each has a charming gilded dot on its head. One sits on a custom wooden stand. These tiles were made to sit atop the corners of a house, guarding over the people who lived within. Size of one with stand: 4.9" L x 12.35" W x 16.5" H (12.4 cm x 31.4 cm x 41.9 cm); 20.5" H (52.1 cm) on included custom stand.
