Description:

India, 18th century CE. Rare bronze betel nut container in the form of a peacock. Standing on circular base with tail flared, hinged ring on back and tail hinged to allow for easy access. Betel nuts (actually the areca nut, the seed of the areca palm) were a stimulant and chewed to create a nice warming sensation. Size: 3.5" L x 3.75" H (8.9 cm x 9.5 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Paul and Louise Bernheimer collection, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA., acquired before 1980.
