Description:

Native American, Northwest Coast, Alaska, Bering Sea, Inuit Punuk / Thule peoples, 17th to 18th century CE. Snow goggles, hand-carved from walrus or whale bone with decorative incised motifs and inlaid with glass seed beads. The slits improved the wearer's visual acuity by reducing the harsh glare on snow and ice. The glass beads indicate contact with Russian / Asian or other European fur traders - trade beads estimated to be from the 1400s have been discovered in archeological sites such as Punyik Point! These spectacular spectacles come in a modern display case. Size of goggles: 5.25" L x 1.75" W (13.3 cm x 4.4 cm); case: 8" L x 8" W (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm)
