Description:

Western Europe, Spain, ca. second half of the 16th century CE. A rare mold blown glass cup with an ovoid profile and ribbed exterior. At the center of the body, running through the ribbing, are two words in relief: "Ave Maria", meaning "Hail Mary," the opening words of the prayer asking for the intercession of the Virgin Mary that forms the basis of the rosary. This style of glass vessel was made during a time when the Spanish glass-making industry was heavily influenced by that of Venice. This beautifully preserved glass vessel is a lovely devotional item and reminder of the deep religiosity of Spain during this time. Size: 2.4" W x 3.75" H (6.1 cm x 9.5 cm)
