Description:

Asian Art. Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 15th century CE. A double-sided hand drum, traditionally played in Tibetan Buddhism, made of two rounded pieces of wood with hide stretched over them. The hide is nailed onto the sides of the drum with iron nails which are well preserved here. A brown textile with a string is wrapped around the middle; the drum would once have been playable by attaching something to the string and shaking it back and forth. In Tantric Buddhism, the drum is used alongside the vajra and the bell; the sound of the drum as it stops vibrating from being struck represents emptiness. Size: 4.2" W x 5.25" H (10.7 cm x 13.3 cm)
