Description:

Central Asia, Northern India or Nepal, ca. 10th century CE. A beautiful grey stone lingam (linga), with a cuboid base, an octagonal body, and a rounded cylindrical top. The stone is wonderfully smooth and feels cool to the touch. Size: 4.7" L x 4.7" W x 17.75" H (11.9 cm x 11.9 cm x 45.1 cm)

Lingam stones are abstract representations of the god Shiva (Siva) found in temples or smaller shrines. Sometimes they occur naturally, but this one is clearly carved. They are often placed alongside representations of the goddess Shakti, called the yoni. This is one of the few truly abstract representations of a god found in Hinduism.
