Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca / Quimbaya culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A wonderful hand-built hollow terracotta male rattle figure, standing upright on stocky legs, his arms bending inward and resting on his chest. Except for a painted necklace and raised arm bands, he is nude, with delineated genitalia and vent hole opening between his legs. His broad and stylized head is a wide, trapezoid-shape with projecting lateral corners, the lower pair are ears and pierced, and the face consists of pinched eyelids and mouth under a bulbous nose with a pierced septum. The highly burnished surface is embellished with a warm orange slip, and remains of the black pigments that highlight the face and neck are faint but present. The rattle ball is still loose inside and emits sound! Size: 5.25" L x 2" W x 9.25" H (13.3 cm x 5.1 cm x 23.5 cm)
