Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca / Quimbaya culture, 4th to 7th century CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery male slab figure with tubular arms and legs. The figure is seated upon a wide posterior, has deep grooves adorned with incised geometric motifs around the knees, and raises both arms with open palms suggestive of holding something at one time. The rectangular head boasts slender eyes, a bulbous nose with a pierced septum, thin lips above a pair of pierced holes, and three additional pierced holes along the wide forehead. Faded red-and-black negative resist motifs adorn the body and head of the figure. Slab figures like this example were placed with burial offerings in shaft and chamber tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 8" W x 9.125" H (20.3 cm x 23.2 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
