Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca region, Quimbaya culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An intriguing hand-built and highly-burnished pottery sculpture depicting a seated male figure with wide-spread legs and impressed fingers resting atop bent knees. The bulbous body and sloping shoulders are decorated with intricate black-on-red negative resist linear motifs. The ovoid head boasts slit-form eyes, a rounded nose with a pierced septum intended for additional ornamentation, perky ears, a thin mouth, and a bald top. Within the hollow body are several small pottery balls which emit a rattling sound when jostled. Size: 7.875" W x 7.5" H (20 cm x 19 cm).
