Description:

Roman, late Republic to early Imperial Period, ca. late 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A beautiful mold-formed bowl made from translucent glass of a pale blue-green hue. The bowl is defined by a lightly-concave base, expanding walls with a thin rim, and a shallow interior cavity. The exterior is covered with twenty raised ribs, and a pair of lightly-abraded circles grace the interior of the basin. This style is known as "pillar-molded" glass, referring to the production technique where the shape of the bowl is determined by taking a flat sheet of pliable glass and placing it into a solid mold upside-down; this glass is then worked so that it is slipped/sagged over the mold to create the ribs on the exterior. Size: 6.1" W x 1.5" H (15.5 cm x 3.8 cm).
