Ancient Egypt, likely originating in Cyprus, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved alabaster alabastron of flat-bottomed form that exhibits hues of tan, cream, goldenrod, and wheat; these colors are translucent and can be seen when placed next to a light source. The tapered vessel features a pair of lug handles that protrude from the shoulder before the body terminates in a rolled rim that perhaps once accommodated a lid. Though the ancient alabastron form originated in Greece, its image became ubiquitous with luxury and opulence and spread throughout the ancient world. Size: 2.3" W x 8" H (5.8 cm x 20.3 cm)
Exhibited in the Drexel Institute from 1809 to 1915, thence to MIA, and then at the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), California State University, San Bernardino from 1996 to 2023, reference number EL01.188.1996.

- Condition: Restoration to one small area of lower body, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and earthen deposits commensurate with age, with small chips around rim and lug handles, otherwise in excellent condition. Great surface smoothness throughout, and nice preservation to overall form. Drexel museum number wearing on verso but is still visible.
