Pre-Columbian, Colombia, La Tolita, Tumaco, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. Effigy graters (rollador) were utilized in the Tumaco region of what is now Colombia, by the Tolita culture, oftentimes taking the attractive stylized form of a fish or squid. Used to grate various vegetables, they were made with raised horizontal sections inset with sharp stones. This very fine example shows liberal remains of original red pigment. Custom stand.
