Description:

Native American, Scioto County Ohio, Middle Woodland Hopewell, ca. 100 BCE to 500 CE. Carved from a grey stone, a beaver effigy platform pipe - the animal perched upon a curved integral platform, tempted by a bundle of tree branches delineated in low relief. The beaver is depicted with wonderful details: partially pierced eyes, incised brows, nose, and teeth, paws, and a furry tail in low relief. A fine example from this Native American tradition. This pipe was published in "The Hopewell Pipe: The Collection of Rodney R. Parsons" (1982), p. 19, illustration #66.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection; ex-Rodney R. Parsons collection - published in "The Hopewell Pipe: The Collection of Rodney R. Parsons" (1982), p. 19, illustration #66
