Description:

Eurasian, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. This is a lovely, complementary pair of gilt bronze rectangular plaques, each depicting two horses raised on their hind legs in a landscape in low relief. Each plaque has a hole drilled in it. The horses, while somewhat abstract, are clear in form. Nomadic horse peoples dominated the steppes of Eurasia for millennia, and horses are common themes in their artwork; this is, after all, the place where genetic evidence suggests horses were first domesticted around 4500 BCE. Comes displayed on a custom stand. Size of each: 2.6" L x 3.8" W (6.6 cm x 9.7 cm).

Published in J. Eisenberg. "Art of the Ancient World," vol. XXI (2010), no. 245.
